August 10th, 2006 | Bookstop Permalink | Comment (3) The Alabama Theater was built in 1939. The theater closed in 1983 and reopened as a Bookstop in 1989. Work was done to preserve both the exterior and interior Art Deco architecture. You can still see the screen at the front of the theater and go up to the balcony which now holds a coffee shop. This building has been declared endangered by the Greater Houston Preservation Alliance. You can read more here. |
